Few acoustics carry the quiet authority of a D-28 and this 2005 example delivers exactly what you’d hope for the moment you strike a chord. Big, piano-like low end, clear and ringing trebles and that unmistakable scooped mid character that leaves space for everything else while still sounding full on its own. It’s the sound that’s anchored countless records and it’s all here in spades.

It’s been played, which is exactly what you want. The top has opened up nicely, giving it a responsive, broken-in feel with plenty of volume on tap and a relaxed, confident projection. There’s early fret wear mainly in the lower positions but nothing that holds it back. Surface scratches and general handling marks sit across the finish, along with some subtle discolouration behind the bridge and where the fingerboard meets the soundhole. The fingerboard has been polished to a slight sheen. There are also faint drop and spatter marks where liquid has lightly reacted with the nitro, but they’re barely noticeable unless you go looking and catch the light just right.

Overall, it’s a well-kept, honest D-28 that’s been used properly and sounds better for it.
