What Makes the Ibanez AF Series Different?
Hollow-Body Design
The defining feature of the AF Series is its full hollow-body construction. The larger body and internal air cavity contribute to a resonant, open character, making these guitars particularly suited to clean and lightly driven tones. The traditional body shape also gives the AF Series its distinctive appearance, with f-holes adding to the classic aesthetic.
Warm, Versatile Tone
AF guitars are generally equipped with humbucking pickups designed to produce smooth, rounded tones with plenty of warmth. This makes them well suited to jazz chords, blues phrasing and soulful lead playing, while they can also handle rock and other styles with the right amplification.
The natural resonance of the hollow body adds another element to the sound, giving chords and sustained notes a full, spacious quality.
Player-Focused Design
Despite their traditional styling, AF guitars feature the kind of practical playability associated with Ibanez. Comfortable neck profiles, accessible controls and well-designed hardware make them suitable for expressive playing across the fingerboard.
The larger hollow-body format also gives the AF Series a different physical feel from Ibanez's slimmer solid-body guitars, appealing to players who prefer a more substantial traditional instrument.
A Range of Specifications
The AF range can vary between models in areas such as pickups, neck construction, fingerboard materials, hardware and finishes. These differences allow players to choose a specification that matches their preferred playing style and tonal requirements.
From straightforward classic-inspired configurations to models with upgraded components, the AF Series provides different options within the same hollow-body concept.
Understanding the Ibanez AF Series Range
The Ibanez AF range centres on the traditional full hollow-body electric guitar. Models share the core characteristics that define the series, while individual specifications can change across the range.
Pickup configuration is one of the key differences between models, with humbuckers providing the smooth, warm response associated with hollow-body guitars. Neck and fingerboard specifications can also influence the feel of each instrument, while different finishes provide a choice of visual styles. The larger body design makes the AF Series particularly distinctive compared with Ibanez ranges such as the RG, S or AZ. Instead of focusing primarily on modern performance styling, AF guitars draw on the established design of classic hollow-body instruments while retaining Ibanez's approach to construction and playability.
Who Is the Ibanez AF Series For?
The Ibanez AF Series is suited to players who want the warmth, resonance and visual character of a traditional hollow-body guitar.
It is particularly well suited to:
Jazz and jazz-influenced playing
Blues and soul
Clean and lightly driven guitar tones
Chord-based playing
Vintage-inspired styles
Players looking for a larger hollow-body guitar
The AF Series can also work well for rock, indie and other styles when paired with suitable amplification and effects. Its full hollow construction gives it a different tonal response from a typical solid-body electric guitar, making it a useful choice for players looking to add variety to their setup.
Choosing an Ibanez AF Series Guitar
When choosing an Ibanez AF guitar, consider the pickup configuration, neck feel, fingerboard specification and overall finish. These features can make a noticeable difference to the playing experience and help determine which model suits your preferences. Think about the kind of tones you want from the guitar, too. Players looking for smooth, rounded clean sounds may appreciate the natural warmth of the hollow-body design, while those planning to use more gain may want to consider the specific pickup and construction details of each model. It is also worth considering the physical feel of a full hollow-body guitar. AF models have a larger body than many of Ibanez's modern solid-body guitars, so trying different instruments can help you find the right combination of comfort, balance and playability.
