Using the same technology platform as its larger siblings in the Cubase family, Cubase Elements 8 gives you plenty of features that help seize the moment when musical creativity strikes, including chord tracks and pads for intuitive song-writing, a range of instruments to fill out your musical ideas and a palette of studio- grade effects to help polish the results to a professional level. Cubase Elements 8 is your personal music studio incorporating professional workflows as used by countless professional artists around the globe.
    Improved Windows handling
Cubase Elements 8 introduces a new windows handling paradigm that makes for a more efficient workflow. All windows can be freely placed on any display and maximised, restored, minimised, tiled and cycled through by using standard Windows OS commands. Windows will now also group Cubase windows in the taskbar, preview window content and show mini icons.
    Chord Pads
Chord pads are a great way to playfully and creatively compose with chords. Jam with chords and patterns in real time and remote control multiple parameters to change chords on the fly. You can visually select chords in the circle of 5th view. The chord pads are playable via a MIDI keyboard and real-time parameters allow you to easily improvise chord performances by changing voicings, tensions and more as you go. Record your performance as MIDI events on any record-enabled MIDI or instrument track. Chord pads can also display a number of different chord symbol formats.
    ASIO-Guard 2
ASIO-Guard 2 uses low latencies on the tracks where latency matters while using a larger latency that saves performance for playback tracks. It supports instrument tracks and sample instruments that feature disk streaming and offers two independent buffer sizes, one for real-time usage and the second one for playback performance. Simply record and monitor in real time even on CPU demanding projects.
    Instrument (t)rack 2.0
Cubase Elements 8 makes working with instruments easier, quicker and more transparent: Instrument tracks now features multiple audio outputs for any instrument, and can also be fed by any MIDI track on any channel. Inserting a new instrument into the rack is reflected within the Project window by creating the corresponding instrument track automatically and vice versa. The new Instrument Rack introduces VST Quick Controls for each instrument, letting you modify instruments and sounds even quicker — without even opening their GUI.
    Transient Navigation
The new instant hitpoint navigation function allows you to 'tab to transients' on audio events in the Project window. Hitpoints are automatically calculated in the background as soon as audio material is recorded or imported into the arrangement window. Use keyboard shortcuts to tab back and forth to navigate around the audio material.
    Re-record Mode
Sometimes you want to repeat the recorded take immediately. The new re-record mode allows you to simply hit the record button again and the recording will start from the original position preserving the original pre-count and metronome settings. A handy, time-saving new feature!
    HALion Sonic SE 2
HALion Sonic SE 2 delivers a range of new sounds and instruments for Cubase Elements. The new Trip virtual analogue synth features an arpeggiator module with four variations and over 150 ultra-dynamic sounds. Eight new effect types are also on board, including Tape Saturator, Wah Wah, Auto Filter, Step Flanger, Ring Modulator, Octaver, Vintage Ensemble, Envelope Shaper and an improved Rotary Effect.
    Plug-in Manager
The new plug-in manager let you arrange, sort and group your effects and instruments either at the top level or in custom submenus, making finding your plug-ins easier and letting you focus on what's really important. Create multiple collections as sub-sets of all installed effect and instruments and switch easily between them!
    Dockable Rack and MediaBay
MediaBay and the VST Instrument Rack can now be docked to the right side of the project window. The result is the new Rack Zone with improved efficiency, giving you more time to focus on your creative flow and reducing the number of open windows you need to manage.
    Improved Channel Strip EQ
The channel strip EQ module provides additional mouse-over value readouts for gain, frequency and the equivalent in note pitch. Enter pitch notes or cent values instead of Hz frequencies for each band. The Pre section now offers selectable slopes of 6, 12 (default), 24, 36 and 48 for High- and Low-Cut.
    Tuner Update
The updated Tuner plug-in now features strobe tuning mode, a customisable base frequency and a bigger display for better readability.
    Redesigned Track List and Inspector
The redesigned Track List and Inspector offer now better readability. Track names are easier to find and the reduced set of track controls in the track list reduce clutter. And with the new configuration tabs below the track list you can switch instantly between different track controls configurations. This displays only what you need to see in a specific workflow situation.

I have just upgraded from Cubase Essential 5, which has a simple intuitive layout, to Cubase Elements8 which has not. I find it unnecessarily complicated and regret the change.
