German company RME joins our list of manufacturers to visit at NAMM and keep an eye on in the weeks following the show, especially with the release of their new USB audio interface, the Fireface UFX II. RME specialise in interfaces and preamps and really made waves in the Firewire interface market with the original Fireface models, and although this new model keeps the Fireface name, it has moved away from the Mac-based bus and is a solid USB interface that has the ability to port 60 channels of audio (30 inputs and 30 outputs) and support for sample rates up to 192 kHz.

RME are renowned not only for producing professional interfaces with superior quality preamps and converters, but also for creating products that are extremely well built and reliable, with rock-solid drivers. This reputation has led to Synthax Audio UK (the UK suppliers of RME) announcing that they will provide a 5 year warranty on all new RME Audio products (excluding accessories) that are purchased from us!
As this extended warranty is administered and supported by Synthax Audio UK and not RME themselves, this offer is only available to customers buying from UK dealers such as us.

Sitting at the heart of your studio, your audio interface is something that you need to fully understand in order to make the most out of your sessions. However, let's face it, who actually enjoys flicking through a manual, especially for a type of product that many people regard as one of those slightly boring yet essential purchases? After all, it's not like you can play with your interface like you can with a synth or a guitar whilst you're learning about it!
Luckily, anyone purchasing an RME Fireface UCX or UFX up until August 31st 2013 will get a FREE invite to a webinar (RRP £99) hosted by product manager Rob Masters. During this webinar, Rob and his team will take you through all the essential features of the interfaces, starting with a basic overview and moving on to using the TotalMix FX software for routing, grouping and effects; using the RME Remote Control and using the interfaces in conjunction with an iPad. He will also be dishing out some top tips and there will be an opportunity to put any questions that you have over to Rob and his team so this is the perfect way to become an expert on your interface in as little time as possible.

When recording, my aim is nearly always to capture a sound that is as true to the original as possible. If I want to add any character to my sounds, I want my choice of microphone to dictate this and I will leave any additional intentional colouration down to my arsenal of plug-ins, to process the sound once the recording has been captured. This way, I get the maximum flexibility, having full control over what I add or remove from a sound. After all, it’s a lot easier to filth up a clean signal than it is to clean up an already coloured signal! The words ‘polish’ and ‘turd’ come to mind here…

The Fireface UCX is is a brand new half-rack interface from RME, so you would be right to expect high quality and crystal clear sounds. Its compact size makes it an ideal choice for both studio and live recording purposes and it includes technology from the Fireface UFX, Fireface UC/400 and the Babyface. If you've ever used any of these interfaces before then this should get you very excited!

The Babyface… I’ve often wondered exactly what these products are! I mean, I’ve seen them sat on the shelves in our warehouse, but their soothing blue packaging displaying a large picture of a wide-eyed baby in a nappy always made me think that this was a product for the absolute beginner… either that or it was a box of Pampers! How wrong I was!
