It’s a problem that’s been around for as long as amplified instruments. How to capture your playing in high quality and in a usable format without paying for an expensive studio. Roland has just entered the race with a simple yet bells-and-whistles attached effort.

If you are a musician it is highly likely that at some point you have wanted to record your playing or singing but find that your phone doesn’t capture the full dynamic range of your music and starts to distort when you play at volume. This is because your phone was not designed to record at loud volumes, however the new Roland R-07 was designed with clarity at volume in mind.

The new Roland R-07 High-Resolution Audio Recorder is a convenient handheld recording device for musicians, journalists, students, and anyone who needs to capture sound on the go. The R-07 features multiple high-quality recording modes, plus unique dual recording and hybrid limiting functions that ensure perfect audio capture every time. It also includes Bluetooth remote operation via an app from your Android or iOS mobile device.

While today’s smartphones have the capability to record audio, achieving high-quality results requires using external peripherals that are fussy and inconvenient. Stylish and easy to carry in the pocket of a guitar gigbag, the all-in-one Roland R-07 makes it simple to capture high-resolution audio wherever the user travels.

With Dual Recording and Hybrid Limiting, you’ll never ruin a vital recording due to overload or clipping. And you won’t have to worry about artifacts from aggressive limiting either. The R-07 can make two simultaneous recordings—one at full level and another at a lower level with increased headroom. If there’s unexpected clipping in the main recording, you can replace that section with a portion of the lower-level backup recording. Hybrid Limiting can even handle this automatically, so you get all the safety of limiting with none of the downsides.

The Roland R-07 supports mono and stereo WAV recording at rates up to 24-bit/96 kHz and MP3 recording at rates up to 320 kbps. Top-quality onboard stereo mics are always at the ready, while handy scene setups configure all the critical recorder settings with one touch. The R-07 is powered via two AA batteries or USB bus power, and comes in a choice of black, white, and red colors.

Using the free R-07 remote control app on an iOS or Android mobile device, users can wirelessly manage various R-07 functions and also monitor status and levels while the R-07 is placed in a prime recording location that’s out of reach. This means that you can monitor the recording without being attached to the device. Some other nice little touches include support for microSD, meaning you don’t have to worry about using up the internal memory (you can get a 128gb card for very little money these days!). There is also a built-in speaker for listening back to your recordings on the fly and a handy tuner and metronome is also at the press of a button, making it a brilliant bit of kit for musicians.

Sure, it’s not going to put a recording studio out of business but if you want to record your band when working on some new material, share ideas with other band members or record a rough and ready live album at your local pub, this could be an indispensable bit of kit, and at under £200, it is within easy reach of many bands starting out.
