DJing has come a long way in the last few years since the hazy days of vinyl dubplates! We have now entered the digital era, with a host of software and hardware accessories available to make the DJs life simpler than ever. With such huge advances, DJs no longer have to worry about tasks such as beat-matching and are instead free to use their time in new, more creative ways, often leading to mesmerising results.
Whilst many DJs still prefer the simple pleasures of vinyl mixing (and vinyl certainly still has a place in this industry and for good reason), it cannot be argued that taking a step into the digital domain, or even incorporating digital elements into a traditional set-up, doesn’t open up a whole new world of possibilities. For example, it is now possible to take your entire record collection with you to gigs on a small, hand-held laptop (no more breaking your back lugging a 30kg bag onto the bus), it is simple to add effects and samples over an existing track, and songs don’t have to be played in a linear fashion – you can use digital technology to chop up a track to create a live remix. Plus, with the wealth of technology that is available today, you can even find a product to suit your particular working style, e.g. work straight from the computer, use a hardware controller (with or without traditional jog wheels), or work with timecoded vinyls and CDs!
Let it never be said that a digital DJ is not a real DJ! Top DJs will always find ways to push the boundaries of the technology that they choose to use and as such will find ways to stand out from the rest of the crowd. This is the digital age and this is the future…
